The solution they’ve implemented is quarantining particularly toxic subs so the mainstream doesn’t have to see racism on their feed and banning communities that end up organizing to do explicit harm, e.g. FPH, t_d, there’s the whole miserable laundry list). Reddit hasn’t struggled too much w/ alienating advertisers, but it has come under flack with its users for allowing harassment/hatred communities to organize on their platform (e.g. It's really ham-fisted and unbecoming of "enlightened dictators" as Emperor Xi and his predecessors fancied themselves. If you look to Trump's tendency to never admit any wrong it's kinda like that. The decisions by Blizzard or NBA not to risk their business prospects can trace a root to the ridiculous obsession with "saving face" endemic to Chinese culture. These protests are just accelerating the same questions they'd have faced in 2047, though no one can say whether that's a good or bad thing. Hong Kong's political situation was by nature unstable from the very moment the One Country Two Systems thing was conceived. At least historically I've not seen any revolution started by a population (the urban parts of China) that for outward appearances appear to be content as that in an average US city (and Americans aren't rioting over outrageous healthcare cost and lack of social safety net or even a stolen election.). I'm sure as much as Tencent employees would probably not say no to having a bit more political voice, they may also take a stable job and reasonable standard of living if given a binary choice. ![]() Not letting Tencent or whatever off the hook, just pointing out the complexity when you accuse or suspect some business entity with Chinese ties of being a propaganda arm. Isn't there some intrinsic ambiguity about governmental influence in an authoritarian regime? There's no check on the ruling party's power, so any company that dares to dissent cannot survive, yet surely business and employment need to happen.
